Our mission is to contribute to strong, healthy, and vibrant community by increasing food security, demonstrating sustainable practices, and providing opportunities for community participation and education.  We will accomplish this mission by cultivating a modest garden, distributing food to neighbors, developing a revenue generating community composting program, and by creating opportunities for individuals and groups to participate at every phase of the project.

Why is it called Katharina's Garden

Katharina Von Bora is the wife of Martin Luther. Their love story is one for the ages. While he was busy playing the role of the reformation's leading man, she tended to the garden that sustained them and was his most trusted confidant.

The garden is named in honor of her and the many women like her who have made contributions equal of that to their partners, to important historical movements, but are left out of the popular narrative.

The Partners

This program is a partnership between Homer J's Senior Dog Sanctuary, Faith Lutheran Church, and The Reno Initiative for Shelter & Equality (RISE).

Shareholder Model & Benefits

In order to meet the financial demands of the program, we will be offering members of the community the opportunity to purchase Garden & Compost Shares.  Each of the partners has a limited number of shares to offer and retains the proceeds from their sales to offset any costs.

All shareholders will have the opportunity to compost their home food waste with us, plus they can receive additional benefits depending on the level of contribution they make.  See the brochure below for more details.
